A long week at work for both Mena and myself called for an outing over the weekend. Mena’s friends invited us to Prison Pals Brewing Co. down south and we jumped at the opportunity. Despite it being a little crappy outside we loaded Ollie up in the car and began our adventure to try out a new brewery in Oakland Park and get some fresh air.
Upon arrival at Prison Pals Brewing Co. we entered the outdoor beer garden and it is pretty spectacular – there is a ton of room and plenty of games for the kids if you want to bring them along. The taproom area is a bit small but they have a secondary indoor space with plenty of televisions, seating and a pool table as well.
Now let’s get into the beer because after all the whole point of this adventure was to unwind with some delicious craft beer after a long week. Let’s take a quick look at all the different beers we tried throughout the day:
Prison Pals Brewing Co. Beer
Mena and I had 8 different beers while at the Prison Pals taproom in Oakland Park and we both enjoyed every single one – that is not an easy thing to accomplish as there is usually at least one beer we don’t care for when we try new breweries.
Let’s take a look at seven of the eight beers we had, the last one, Katy Berry, did not make it into a photo – Ollie woke up and we were focused on getting him fed and forgot to take a picture, whoops!
Smoothie Series #1
- Type: Smoothie-style Sour Ale with pineapple, mango and passionfruit.
- ABV: 5%
This beer tasted like an actual fruit smoothie and it had the perfect amount of alcohol – it was the perfect drink to start off a night filled with drinking.
Mena
Desire (Smoothie Series #8)
- Beer Style: Smoothie-Style Sour Ale with strawberry, blood orange and guava.
- ABV: 5%
If you like brunching then this is your craft beer – it has the perfect amount of fruitiness and tartness with just enough bubbles to bring you into brunch mode.
Mena
Namaste
- Beer Style: New England Hazy IPA
- ABV: 7%
My first beer from Prison Pals Brewing Co. and it did not disappoint – if you are looking for a good IPA to sip on then Namaste is perfect for you.
Tim
Hakuna Matata
- Beer Style: American Juicy IPA
- ABV: 6.2%
Another solid IPA from Prison Pals and a great way to end the night after devouring our Argentinian Platter – we are going to have to make another trip down south soon.
Tim
Queen
- Beer Style: New England Hazy IPA
- ABV: 6.2%
Civil Society Brewing is my favorite brewery and they specialize in hazy IPAs so I am extremely particular when it comes to this style of beer. I must say, Queen was definitely my favorite of the day and I have to give credit to Prison Pals because it was delicious!
Tim
The Ace of Cups
- Beer Style: Sour Lager – Fruit Gose with Himalayan salt, hibiscus, cinnamon, and cranberry.
- ABV: 4%
As the night ended we went with a little lighter beer and while this sour was great, I would’ve liked to have a bit more cinnamon and even more cranberry as I love drinking cranberry juice regularly – all in all a great beer and would definitely have it again.
Tim
The Two of Cups
- Beer Style: Sour Lager – Fruit Gose with mango and guava.
- ABV: 4%
I strayed away from the IPAs on this round and I have to say this beer is amazing. Aside from Queen, this was by far my favorite of the day. It tasted just like you were drinking juice and you’d never know this had alcohol in it.

Prison Pals Brewing Co. Food
In addition to the excellent craft beers, Prison Pals offers up some delicious food. We had not had lunch yet so when we arrived we ordered chicken wings and a classic burger – we devoured the food before the thought of taking pictures crossed our mind but we promise you that it was all really good!
Looking at the menu we saw that they fired up the grill on Friday and Saturday nights for special Argentinian dishes. Mena and I decided that we were going to wait until the special food menu was available and we are so glad that we did.
Argentinian Platter
Our friends that we were with decided to get the Argentinian Platter for the four of us to split. The platter consisted of the following: Argentinian grilled flank steak, 2 empanadas, 2 Argentinian Chorizos, in-house made chimichurri, a baguette and seasoned steak fries. All of us agreed that the food was excellent and went well with the beers offered – we will definitely be going back!
