Mena’s Venezuelan friend, Dulce, is in town visiting and she found Odd Birds Cocktail Lounge & Kitchen for us all to go and try near downtown St. Augustine. I’ve only had arepas and tequenos so I was excited to give Venezuelan food a proper review.
We had originally planned to do all the touristy stuff in downtown St. Augustine as Mena’s friend had never been there before. Lunch before all of the walking downtown was a must so Odd Birds worked out perfectly as it was only a few minutes away from the famous Castillo de San Marcos.
Now that we’ve got our agenda for the day out of the way, let’s get into what you all are here for, the food and drinks!
Odd Birds Food
We all decided that we were going to order a bunch of appetizers to give the most amount of different Venezuelan food a try. If you are looking for a full meal then they do offer a variety of sandwiches and entrees as well as a late-night menu for all of you party animals out there.
Below you will find all of the different food items we tried during our first visit to Odd Birds Cocktail Lounge & Kitchen:
Cachapa
This was my first time having cachapa and I am hooked! By far the best dish we had at Odd Birds – I love the grilled corn and the cheesy pancake goodness. Sign me up to have this every single morning for breakfast.

Tequenos
These are definitely not the tequenos you find in the frozen food section at Publix – they were really good and the garlic dipping sauce was delicious.
Tim
Empanadas
Chicken was our meat of choice and these were definitely the most unique empanadas I’ve had – I thought they were really good but could’ve used some sort of spicy sauce to dip it in.
Tim
Mojo Chicharrones
I’ve had the Cuban and Peruvian variation of Chicharrones and the Venezuelan version was equally delicious – how can you go wrong with fried pork belly?!

Odd Birds Cocktails
I decided to join our 15-month old son, Ollie, and drink only water at lunch as I knew we had a long day ahead of us exploring downtown St. Augustine. Mena and Dulce were dying to try the fancy cocktails that Odd Birds is infamous for so they each ordered a drastically different cocktail.
Let’s take a look at the cocktails Mena and Dulce ordered below:
Bird on a Leash
- Description: Vodka, Lychee, Rum Haven Coconut Rum, Sugar & Grapefruit Bitters
This cocktail was super tropical and refreshing – it hit the spot for me and went great with the delicious food we had.
Mena
Noggin Knocker
- Description: Carnitas Fat-Washed Diplomatico and Coconut Cartel Rum, Vanilla Liquor & Coquito
While the whole ‘carnitas fat’ liquor sounds like it would be awful, this cocktail was quite refreshing and warmed me up while dealing with the frigid Florida temperatures.
Dulce
While the inside of Odd Birds was completely full due to a private event, our experience was wonderful, even while sitting outside in the chilly weather. The vibe of the outdoor patio was lowkey and every bit of Venezuelan food we tried was phenomenal – I cannot recommend this place enough as they have great food, attentive staff and delicious cocktails.
Mena and I are looking forward to going back and having a few of their entree items as well as some more of their craft cocktails.
